9Q-COP in bushland off the runway
A Hewa Bora Airways Boeing 727-100, registration 9Q-COP performing flight EO-952 from Kinshana N'Djili to Kisangani (Democratic Republic of Congo) with 112 people on board, missed Kisangani's runway while attempting to land in poor weather conditions (heavy rain, limited visibility, thunderstorms in the area) at 15:00L (14:00Z) and broke up coming to rest about 300 meters from the runway. Emergency serivces rescued at least 42 people alive, at least 46 occupants perished.
Hewa Bora confirmed one of their Boeing 727s crash landed at Kisangani in bad weather, they have no information about the fate of the occupants yet.
The airline's chairmain said later, that there were 110 people on board, 53 occupants survived, 46 bodies have been recovered, 11 people are unaccounted for. The airplane was caught in a violent storm about 250 meters short of the runway, the airplane was unable to reach the runway.
The provincial governor reported 42 occupants have been rescued alive, 68 bodies were recovered, the search for the remaining people is still ongoing.
DR Congo's central government said, 49 occupants of the aircraft were rescued alive, 63 people died in the accident. Other government sources later released figures of 53 survivors and 127 casualties explaining the airline had underestimated the number of occupants.
According to AIP DR Congo the airport offers a runway 13/31 with 3500 meters length, no instrument procedures are published by AIP DR Congo.
Jeppesen provides charts for VOR/DME respective VOR approaches to runways 13 and 31, both runways featuring HIALS approach lighting, high intensity runway lighting, center line lighting and VASIs. MDA for runway 13 is 1800 feet MSL (VOR/DME) or 1850 feet MSL (VOR), 393 or 443 feet AGL, for runway 31 the MDA is given as 1730 feet MSL (VOR/DME) or 1790 feet MSL (VOR), 313 feet or 373 feet AGL.
No weather data are available for Kisangani (neither Metar nor reports of a local weatherstation).
According to ATDB Hewa Bora operates one Boeing 727-100 registration 9Q-COP and 4 Boeing 727-200s registrations 9Q-CHE, 9Q-CHF, 9Q-CHG and S9-PSC. Hewa Bora lists 2 Boeing 727s as part of their fleet. According to photographic evidence no Hewa Bora Boeing 727 except 9Q-COP has been flying since 2008 however, business data per September 2010 list only one Boeing 727-100 9Q-COP in flying condition.
